Lean Manufacturing and Total Productive Maintenance: A Synergistic Perspective on Prevention in OHS

Introduction: This study explores the synergy between Lean Manufacturing (LM) and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) as innovative tools for prevention in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), based on the premise that their integration transforms OHS management from reactive practices to proactive strategies for occupational risk prevention. Methodology: A systematic narrative analysis of scientific literature was employed to collect data through exhaustive searches in Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science, using keywords, inclusion criteria, and screening protocols for studies published between 2013 and 2023. Registration forms were utilized, and qualitative analysis was conducted by coding findings into thematic categories that revealed significant patterns for the research. Results: The results indicate that the joint implementation of LM and TPM enhances operational efficiency, thereby creating optimal OHS conditions; it fosters a culture of occupational health promotion and active staff participation; and it reduces workplace accidents and injuries by eliminating failure causes through preventive maintenance. Moreover, this synergy drives a culture of continuous improvement and prevention, facilitating the early detection of risk situations. Discussion: The analysis suggests that integrating both tools has a multiplier effect, strengthening the organizational culture oriented toward occupational health and worker well-being, reducing accident rates, and promoting safer and more efficient work environments. Conclusions: The synergy of these methodologies not only optimizes productivity but also elevates OHS standards, providing benefits in risk management and organizational performance, thereby enhancing competitiveness.
