Influence of prosthetic design and biofilm control on periodontal risk: A review of recent literature (2020-2025)

Periodontal health is a fundamental pillar of oral well-being, especially in individuals who use dentures, whether fixed or removable. In these cases, aspects such as prosthetic device design, oral hygiene, and preventive strategies play a determining role, given that prostheses can promote biofilm retention, the main trigger of periodontal diseases. This study aims to examine, through a narrative review of the scientific literature, the impact of denture uses on periodontal health. To this end, a systematic search was conducted in databases such as PubMed and SciELO, selecting 19 publications from 2020 to 2025. A search strategy with Boolean operators (AND, OR) was used, using key terms related to prosthetics, periodontal health, and biofilm, in English and Spanish. The importance of instructing patients in rigorous hygiene practices is highlighted as an essential complement to prosthetic treatment. The scope of this research is limited to a documentary analysis of specialized sources, allowing for a descriptive and comparative integration of the findings. However, as this is a narrative review, no direct clinical data or statistical analysis are included, so the conclusions should be interpreted with caution.
