Tooth loss due to periodontal disease

Oral health is essential in human life. Hence, the insistence on educating people about the care and development of oral hygiene habits. It aims to raise awareness of the importance of teeth for health, personal appearance, and self-esteem. Thus, when each person does not make a personal commitment to regularly visit the dentist, diseases such as gingivitis and, in its most aggressive stage, periodontitis, which leads to tooth loss, arise. The purpose of this research was to review the literature on periodontal diseases that impact tooth loss. It is based on documentary research; therefore, it is a review article. For this purpose, the following search engines were used as search strategies: (a) PubMed, (b) Google Scholar, (c) SciELO, (d) Google, and (e) Microsoft Copilot and Gemini, as Artificial Intelligence tools. Among other things, the following conclusions were reached: The absence of teeth not only affects masticatory function, but also has aesthetic and psychological repercussions for patients. Tooth loss due to periodontitis is not an isolated oral problem; it is also linked to systemic diseases such as diabetes, since cardiovascular disease can develop, because bacteremia, caused by periodontal infections, can contribute to the formation of atherosclerotic plaques.
